 Gail D. Hughes

Gail D. Hughes is public health professional, epidemiologist, professor and global health consultant and has worked for more than 35 years in government, pharmaceutical, academic and non-profit sectors. 

 

She holds appointments as full professor at University of Western Cape, South Africa; adjunct professor at University of Missouri School of Health Professions, USA; and has been visiting scholar, lecturer and researcher at UEFS in Brazil, University of Oslo, University of Technology Sydney, and George Town University, USA.  She received her PhD and Masters from the University of California-Berkeley. She has held leadership positions in all sectors of her work experience and was the first woman as Deputy Dean of Research and Postgraduate studies at the University of Western Cape Faculty of Natural Sciences. 

 

Gail has lived and worked on two continents and traveled extensively on all six continents and numerous countries. She is an accomplished author of scientific publications, white papers, books and book chapters and has been invited to speak at international and national scientific conferences/meetings, communities and beyond! She serves as mentor, coach, and motivator to young women, emerging professionals and postgraduate students.

 

She is the mother of three sons and spends her time between North America and Africa. Her hobbies and passions include dragon-boat paddling, surfing, stand-up paddling, kayaking, traveling,  and volunteering with community-based projects such as Teen Moms, Evangeline Ministries and SurfPops.
